FROM THE HEART - An artistic response to the heart of Australia (2020)
The works in this collection are the result of a trip I made to Central Australia in September 2019. They fall into three groups:
The first is a little series I’ve called ‘Postcards from …’ These are postcard-sized watercolour paintings, like snapshots, from a variety of places I visited during the course of that time away.
The second is a collection of miniature watercolour paintings on Yupo paper. They’re very different from my postcard series, especially in colour. I’ve always seen the Australian outback in two distinct colour palettes. There are the beautifully soft, almost faded-looking colours captured so perfectly by artists like Hans Heysen and Albert Namatjira, and then there are the strikingly intense colours that really blow your mind when you see them for the first time. My Yupo paintings belong in this second category.
My third group of paintings are mostly larger pieces and a bit of a mix. Some are in the first, softer outback palette I’ve described above, while others incorporate a much bolder palette. Many have a brush-swept edge to them and incorporate the use of dots - a subtle tribute to the work of the Aboriginal artists of the outback.
Unless noted otherwise, the paintings below are available for purchase. Please drop me an email.
